Behind the Music

If you have seen no other fireworks display other than Seattle’s, you might take for granted the stellar design and picturesque setting that the Family 4th at Lake Union offers—it is truly in a class of its own. But what also sets the Family 4th apart from other top shows in the country is the music.

Pyro Spectacular, the premier pyrotechnic company that has designed Seattle’s show for 15 years, notes that of the 400 shows they produce in a year, only one-quarter are synched to music. The Seattle show is tightly synched, custom-scored for one show only and computer controlled—this is the hard way to produce a show, but it results in a full bodied emotional experience that can only be experienced this way. And of the shows that do feature music, most rely on a “traditional” score; rarely will a city dare to mix artists such as Jimi Hendrix with patriotic standards in their Independence Day fireworks displays… but that is what makes our show “so Seattle”—quirky, fun, and displaying a whole lot of heart.

The music drives the production, and so as the music changes annually, the look of the show changes. It is never the same year to year, so the audience is experiencing a fleeting work of art.

This year Chris Porter, One Reel’s Programming Director, weaves themes of celebration, patriotism, color and gratitude together to create a dynamic musical score. Read below what Chris had to say about the inspiration behind each selection:

“Happy Birthday” (intro) - Altered Images

The intro to this ’80s classic is a nod to our country’s birthday, of course!

“Heavy Action” - Johnny Pearson

Last used for the 2008 show, this was the intro music for many years for Monday Night Football—one of America’s favorite pastimes. Besides the football angle, this selection contains a lot of dynamics that work well for fireworks effects.

“Shining Star” - Earth, Wind & Fire

The fireworks are like shining stars in the sky during our celebration, and there are stars on Old Glory. The lyrics say “When you wish upon a star, dreams will take you very far,” which is what the American Dream is all about!

“Smoke on the Water” - Deep Purple

Smoke on the water, and fire in the sky. Yes, sometimes we’re that literal.

“I Can See Clearly Now” - Johnny Nash

A song about clarity, positive drive and reaching goals—another song about the American Dream! And, we admit, we were trying to put in a special order for good weather.

“Symphony No. 9 in D Minor” - Beethoven

While there is no particular tie to the holiday, symphonic pieces are often a staple at fireworks shows as the music dynamics work well with the visuals. This is one of Beethoven”s most popular works, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker.

“Fly Me to the Moon” - Frank Sinatra

Sinatra was one of the most iconic American music masters of all time. We celebrate his life and music with a piece that acknowledges the fireworks intertwinement with the moon and the emotion of love.

“With a Little Help from My Friends” - Joe Cocker

This cover of a Lennon/McCartney composition shows on our gratitude for all the love and support we’ve received for this event from the community.

“Firework” - Katy Perry

When this song was recently released, it was obvious to many that it was destined to be included in this show. Its title, subject matter, and dynamics all fit the bill.

“Unchained Melody” - The Righteous Brothers

This is a poignant American love song that helps change the flow of the show to get ready for the finale. We received much positive feedback the last time it was used, so we brought it back for an encore.

“God Bless America” - Kate Smith

This has often been a staple song of our show for good reason. It’s a fantastic song about our land sung by the lady who became famous to many for singing it.

“The Stars and Stripes Forever” - Arthur Fiedler & the Boston Pops Orchestra

One of the greatest and dynamic pieces in American orchestral music—its dynamics and sentiment are perfect for a grand fireworks finale.
